Hip Replacement
Hip replacement replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial ball and socket. It is most often done for advanced hip arthritis that causes pain and stiffness no longer relieved by non-surgical care. It is one of the most common and well-studied surgeries in orthopedics, with high rates of patient-reported pain relief.
What to expect
- Performed under general or spinal anesthesia.
- Surgery typically takes about one to two hours.
- Many patients go home the same day or after a one-night stay, depending on health and home support.
- Most people walk with a walker or cane the day of surgery, and physical therapy begins right away.
- Many daily activities resume within about six to twelve weeks; full recovery commonly takes several months to a year.

Common questions
- How long does hip replacement recovery take?
- Most people walk with support the day of surgery and return to many daily activities within six to twelve weeks. Strength and stamina typically keep improving for months afterward.
- How long do hip implants last?
- Many modern hip implants last 15 to 20 years or more, though results vary with activity, weight, and implant type. Your surgeon can discuss what is realistic for you.
- When should I consider hip replacement?
- Surgery is typically considered when hip pain limits walking, sleep, or daily life and non-surgical care, therapy, medication, injections, activity changes, no longer helps enough. An evaluation with a surgeon can clarify your options.
