Knee Arthroscopy
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a surgeon inserts a small camera and instruments into the knee through small incisions. It is used to diagnose and treat problems such as meniscus tears, cartilage damage, and loose fragments. Because the incisions are small, recovery is typically faster than with open surgery.
What to expect
- Typically performed under general or regional anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
- The procedure usually takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on what is treated.
- Most people go home the same day, often walking with little or no support.
- Early recovery focuses on reducing swelling and restoring motion; light activity often resumes within days to a couple of weeks.
- Full recovery depends on what was done, simple procedures may take a few weeks, while repairs can take several months.

Common questions
- How long does it take to recover from knee arthroscopy?
- For simple procedures like trimming a meniscus tear, many people return to normal activity in a few weeks. If tissue was repaired, recovery is longer and your surgeon will set the timeline.
- Is knee arthroscopy the same as knee surgery for arthritis?
- No. Arthroscopy is generally not recommended as a treatment for knee arthritis alone. It is used for specific mechanical problems such as tears or loose fragments.
- Will I need physical therapy afterward?
- Often, yes. Even after minor arthroscopy, a short course of physical therapy typically helps restore motion and strength. Your surgeon will advise what your knee needs.
