Kyphoplasty
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that treats painful vertebral compression fractures, most often caused by osteoporosis. A small balloon is inserted into the broken vertebra to restore height, and the space is filled with bone cement to stabilize it. The goal is rapid pain relief and support for the fractured bone.
What to expect
- Performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, through a small incision in the back.
- The procedure typically takes under an hour per treated level and is usually outpatient.
- Many patients notice pain improvement within days, sometimes sooner.
- Light activity typically resumes quickly, with strenuous activity restricted for a few weeks.
- Ongoing treatment of the underlying bone condition, such as osteoporosis, is an important part of care.

Common questions
- How soon does kyphoplasty relieve pain?
- Many patients report meaningful relief within the first few days after the procedure, though results vary. Your physician will advise if your fracture is likely to respond.
- Who is a candidate for kyphoplasty?
- Candidates typically have a recent, painful vertebral compression fracture, often from osteoporosis, that has not improved with bracing, medication, and rest. Imaging helps confirm the fracture is appropriate to treat.
- Do compression fractures always need a procedure?
- No. Many heal over six to twelve weeks with pain management, activity modification, and sometimes a brace. Kyphoplasty is typically considered when pain remains severe despite that care.
