Labrum Repair
Shoulder labrum repair is an arthroscopic surgery that reattaches the labrum, the ring of cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket, when it tears. Labral tears often result from dislocations or repeated overhead motion, and common types include Bankart and SLAP tears. Repair aims to restore stability and reduce pain.
What to expect
- Performed arthroscopically under general anesthesia, often with a nerve block.
- Surgery typically takes one to two hours and is usually outpatient.
- A sling is commonly worn for about four weeks while the repair heals.
- Physical therapy begins early with gentle motion, then progresses to strengthening over several months.
- Return to sports commonly takes four to six months; throwing athletes often need longer.

Common questions
- How long does labrum repair recovery take?
- Most people are out of the sling in about a month and back to daily activities soon after. Return to sports commonly takes four to six months, and overhead or throwing athletes may need more time.
- Does a torn labrum always need surgery?
- No. Many labral tears are managed with physical therapy and activity changes first. Surgery is typically considered for repeated shoulder dislocations or symptoms that persist despite rehab.
- What is the difference between a SLAP tear and a Bankart tear?
- A SLAP tear involves the top of the labrum where the biceps tendon attaches; a Bankart tear involves the front-lower labrum and usually follows a dislocation. Treatment differs by tear type and age, so an evaluation matters.
