Rotator Cuff Repair
Rotator cuff repair is a surgery that reattaches a torn rotator cuff tendon to the upper arm bone. The rotator cuff is the group of tendons that stabilizes the shoulder and powers lifting and rotation. Tears are common with age and with overhead work or sports, making this one of the most frequent shoulder surgeries.
What to expect
- Usually performed arthroscopically under general anesthesia, often with a nerve block for pain control.
- Surgery typically takes one to two hours and is usually outpatient.
- A sling is typically worn for about four to six weeks to protect the repair.
- Physical therapy progresses in stages, motion first, then strengthening, over several months.
- Full recovery commonly takes four to six months, and regaining full strength can take up to a year.

Common questions
- How long is recovery after rotator cuff surgery?
- Most people wear a sling for four to six weeks and return to light daily activities within a couple of months. Full strength commonly takes four to six months or longer, depending on tear size.
- Do all rotator cuff tears need surgery?
- No. Many tears, especially partial tears, improve with physical therapy, activity changes, and sometimes injections. Surgery is typically considered for full tears in active people or when non-surgical care has not helped.
- How painful is recovery?
- Discomfort is common in the early weeks and is typically managed with a nerve block at surgery, medication, ice, and proper sling use. Pain generally improves steadily as the repair heals; tell your care team if it does not.
