Shoulder Arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera and instruments inserted through small incisions to diagnose and treat shoulder problems. It is used for rotator cuff tears, labral tears, impingement, stiffness, and loose fragments. Smaller incisions typically mean less early pain than open surgery.
What to expect
- Performed under general anesthesia, often with a nerve block, as an outpatient procedure.
- The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on what is treated.
- A sling is often used afterward; how long depends on whether tissue was repaired.
- Early recovery focuses on controlling swelling and restoring gentle motion.
- Full recovery ranges from a few weeks for simple procedures to several months when tendons or the labrum are repaired.

Common questions
- How long is recovery after shoulder arthroscopy?
- It depends on what was done. Simple procedures may allow return to normal activity in a few weeks, while repairs of the rotator cuff or labrum commonly take four to six months.
- Will I need a sling?
- Usually yes, at least briefly. For repairs, a sling is typically worn for about four to six weeks; for simpler procedures it may be days. Your surgeon will advise.
- Is arthroscopy an option for shoulder arthritis?
- Arthroscopy generally offers limited, temporary benefit for arthritis. Advanced shoulder arthritis is more often treated with other options, including shoulder replacement when symptoms are severe.
