Trigger Finger Release
Trigger finger release is a brief surgery that opens the tight tendon pulley at the base of the finger that causes catching, locking, and pain. Trigger finger happens when a flexor tendon can no longer glide smoothly through its sheath. Release allows the tendon to move freely again.
What to expect
- Usually performed under local anesthesia as a short outpatient procedure, often 15 to 20 minutes.
- Done through a small incision at the base of the finger or thumb.
- Finger movement is encouraged right away to keep the tendon gliding.
- Light hand use typically resumes within days; soreness at the incision can last a few weeks.
- Full recovery commonly takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on how stiff the finger was before surgery.

Common questions
- How long does recovery take after trigger finger release?
- Most people use the hand for light tasks within days and return to full activity within a few weeks. Lingering palm soreness typically fades over several weeks to a few months.
- Does trigger finger always need surgery?
- No. Many cases improve with splinting, activity changes, or a steroid injection, injections resolve a large share of cases. Surgery is typically offered when the finger keeps locking despite those treatments.
- Will the triggering come back after surgery?
- Recurrence in a properly released finger is uncommon, though other fingers can develop triggering later. Your surgeon can discuss your individual risk.
