Laminectomy
Laminectomy is a surgery that removes part of the bony arch (the lamina) at the back of a vertebra to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. It is most often used for spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that commonly develops with age. Relieving that pressure aims to reduce pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs.
What to expect
- Performed under general anesthesia; surgery typically takes one to three hours depending on how many levels are treated.
- Some patients go home the same day; others stay one to two nights.
- Walking usually begins the day of or day after surgery.
- Desk work often resumes within a few weeks; heavier activity takes longer.
- Full recovery commonly takes a few weeks to a few months, longer if a fusion is done at the same time.

Common questions
- How long does laminectomy recovery take?
- Many people return to light activities and desk work within a few weeks. Full recovery commonly takes two to three months, and longer if fusion was added.
- Will a laminectomy fix my leg pain?
- Laminectomy typically relieves leg symptoms caused by nerve compression, such as pain and numbness from stenosis. Back pain from arthritis may persist, so it is important to understand which symptoms the surgery targets.
- Do I need a fusion with my laminectomy?
- Not always. Fusion is typically added only when the spine is unstable or a significant amount of bone must be removed. Your surgeon will explain whether your anatomy calls for it.
